Wits does it again!
By Filipe and Vivian
Once again Wits Table Tennis Club (supported by GCTTA) managed to put together a credible tournament on the 21st April that must rank amongst the best attended Table Tennis events in the Province so far.
In total, the tournament attracted 86 athletes of which 20 where players from the Botswana Defence Force; an enormous tally that included 13 ladies.
The contest kicked off at 09H30 with players being evenly distributed into pools of 4 (or 5 where required) playing to a group-accepted best of 3 games instead of the more traditional best of 5 games. The top 2 in each pool of 4 (or 5 as the case may be) went through to the knockout stages (32 draw). This method ensured that, given the time constraints, and the high levels of player proficiency, the tourney was concluded by 19H00.
The results:
1. Men's singles
Gold: Chijioke Osuji
Silver: Rainer Sztab
Bronze: Bonolo Mabote (Botswana) and Simon Diamant
2. Ladies singles
Gold: Tania Williams
Silver: Milly Volkwyn
Bronze: Danisha Patel and Boitshwarelo Butale (Botswana)
3. Open doubles
Gold: Chijioke Osuji and Rainer Sztab
Silver: Simon Diamant and Francis Obioha
To cap the whole affair, a reporter from the Vuvuzela (a Wits Paper) took photo's and interviewed winners.
Overall, a well organised event. Congratulations to all Participants, Supporters, Wits University, Wits Sports, Wits Table Tennis Club, Tournament Director (Vivian Reddy) and Tournament Referee (Neil du Preez) who through persistent hard work elevated Table Tennis to new levels of excellence. Hats off to all of them.
