SA Wins Table Tennis Gold
By Filipe
As most of you know, the 14th World Veterans Championship was recently held in the beautiful country of Brazil from the 24th to the 30th May 2008 in Rio de Janeiro. This year, no fewer than 10 South Africans made their way to the land of sunshine and carnival.
As with any veteran tournament, while competition is the name of the game, having fun is next on the agenda: while some got lost in the Amazon Jungle, others had a go at being festive with their clothes on - a first in the land of the thong and the string bikini.
The important news of the tournament is the fact that Cal Morris and Tony Economellis won the Men’s over 75 Gold in Doubles play. They defeated a pair from Finland and Sweden in a gruelling 5 setter. It is a feat that has been long in the making, for both athletes have been playing the sport of Table Tennis since before the invention of rubberised racket coverings and expedite rules.
To both athletes, Well done and congratulations!
