2009: The Year in Perspective
Here we are at the end of another table tennis season. And what a year 2009 was:-
In a nutshell:
With the first tranche of the Lotto project complete, the way is now open for developmental projects to take off as soon as the second tranche is released.
Various Club members were selected by SATTB to attend some ITTF technical courses that were on offer: Moegamad – ITTF International Referee’s Course, Gavin – ITTF Racket Controllers Course, José – ITTF National Referee’s Course, Margie – ITTF National Referee’s Course and Filipe – ITTF National Referee’s Course.
Nationally, Gavin did duty as Umpire at the SA Combined Championships while yours truly did duty as Tournament Referee at the SA Combined Vets and Senior Players with Disabilities championships and as Deputy Referee at the SA Combined Senior and Junior Championships. José, Shadrack, Vivian, Margie, Sameera and Virgil played the roles of GCTTA Team Managers and Coaches at the same tournaments.
SATTB had the privilege of hosting two ITTF Para tournaments back to back during the period of the 25 November to the 2 December. These tournaments were held at the Mandeville Indoor Stadium which proved to be the ideal venue for all the athletes with disabilities. Here, Gavin exercised his new found knowledge as a Racket Controller while myself played the role of Deputy Referee under the tutelage of an experienced Egyptian International Referee.
The medal tally in short: Egypt, Nigeria, RSA, Lesotho and Libya.
2009 will be remembered for the year in which three GCTTA Club members were elected onto the SATTB Executive for the next four years: Ganief – President, Hajera – VP Administration and Margie - VP Coaching.
Given the above, the future continues to look attractive where GCTTA is concerned.
What awaits each one of us in 2010 is anyone’s guess, but one thing is for sure, table tennis will once again reign supreme. But for now, some much needed rest and recreation in the company of loved ones and family is called for.
Thus, on behalf of the Executive, I wish all Club members and enthusiasts alike, all the best for the holidays.
May 2010 bring much happiness and health.
