Fun and Competition for Juniors
by Filipe
The 29 August proved to be another grand day for junior table tennis playing athletes from around Gauteng. With athletes from Atridgeville, Tuks Sport (HPC,) Lenasia, SASAPD (Disabled) and SASDP (Deaf) in attendance, the GC Junior Open proved to be a much sought after tournament on the calendar of table tennis activities.
Although the prevailing traffic conditions around Gauteng managed to delay proceedings by an hour, once under way, it was virtually smooth sailing all the way to conclusion at 20H00.
The U12/14 Doubles event brought about the first surprise of the day when Kotelo and Melvin dethroned Samuel and Terence Mathole from their doubles stronghold. This defeat brought about a renewed vigour in the Mathole’s for they proceeded to unseat all challengers in the U14 Boys Singles event with unwavering determination and dogged focus.
The girls events advanced along without any major eventuality except for the fact that Zodwa unseated Khanyisile in the Girls U20 Singles Event by 3 games to 2 – Khanyisile did collect the winners crown in the Girls U17 Singles Event when she defeated Letshego in 3 reasonably easy games.
The Boys U17 Singles event showed the depth of strength within the Mathole clan. Here the Attridgeville boys managed to depose of all much older challengers in a showing of stroke play, tactical expertise and focused tenacity. The eventual finalists, Itumeleng and Sabu from HPC, were the only two who managed to stave off the Mathole onslaught. The finals were a staid affair with Itumeleng defeating Sabu in 3 straight games.
In the U20BS, Itumeleng defeated Chetan 3 games to 2 in a showing of purpose and resolve.
In the end, all was completed on time and without any undue altercations or disagreements. The only downside to the tournament was the lack of volunteers to help administrating and dismantling the event.
