The GC Team Championships a Collaborative Success
by Filipe
For the second year running, the GC Team Open Championships (31/10/09) managed to attract athletes from all walks of life and playing strengths. On the day, 7 teams subscribed themselves to the rigors of play, giving up their day to exercise their craft in an environment of competitiveness and open challenges. Unfortunately Botswana was a no-show due to transport problems.
This year’s tournament was run along the lines of the modern format of team play: A – X, B – Y, C – Z, A – Y, B – X, a format that calls for tactical skills during the tossing processes. Some were caught out by not applying the called-for strategy, specially when selecting the third player, but soon become skilled at it after incurring needless losses during the early stages of the group sections.
As the day progressed, it became obvious that the seeded teams – Anchors and Maccabi - were in danger of losing to their lower ranked counter parts. In the end, Team Anchors hanged on to third spot while Team Maccabi was deposed to second place by a highly motivated Team Chuvic.
As is the norm when competition is intensive, there were some frayed nerves, lost tempers and illegal coaching, but it all came to pass with little disruption to the proceedings at hand.
The finals provided the spectators with some spectacular highlights and some disappointing altercations, but amongst all the unwarranted goings on, Team Chuvic kept their focus and defeated Team Maccabi by 3 matches to 1.
Final team positions:
1st | Team Chuvic | Kingsley, Victor, Charls (Visitors from Nigeria) |
2nd | Team Maccabi | Simon, Jitesh, Berand |
